INNOVATIVE VETERINARY CLINIC IN GRANGER OFFERS LOW-STRESS CARE FOR DOGS
Canine Body and Mind is Granger's Newest Veterinary Wellness Clinic and Force-Free Dog Training Center
GRANGER, Indiana - November 13, 2022 - “Inspired by Kindness & Informed by Science,” Canine Body and Mind is a dog-only physical and behavioral wellness center that helps dog owners obtain basic veterinary care in a timely fashion and a low-stress environment. In addition to veterinary wellness services, Canine Body and Mind offers behavior consults and a range of training services focused on the practical skills needed for lifelong companionship. Canine Body and Mind is owned and operated by veterinarian Beth Belock, DVM, who has been serving small animal patients in Michiana since 2012.
The pet dog population is soaring and overwhelming the veterinary industry, pushing appointment wait lists out weeks or months for typical full-service veterinary clinics or forcing them to turn away new clients. Canine Body and Mind aids the Michiana dog community by reducing wait times. Clients in need of wellness services can self schedule an appointment within days and have access to a 24 hour telemedicine service for minor concerns. For clients who already have a regular veterinarian, complete exam and vaccination records from the Canine Body and Mind wellness visit can be shared with the client’s regular veterinarian to keep them up to date. Canine Body and Mind can also help dog owners looking for a new veterinarian for wellness services in a low-stress environment, functioning as the dog’s primary veterinarian and referring out to local clinics for advanced diagnostics, surgeries, or intensive care.
“One of the best ways that I can enhance a dog’s emotional well-being is to give them a well educated owner.” - Beth Belock, DVM
Dr. Belock designed Canine Body and Mind from the dog’s perspective to create positive veterinary experiences for dogs (and their humans). All appointments are self-scheduled in advance at the client’s convenience, clients are seen one at a time, and there is no waiting room. Instead dogs walk directly into the exam room furnished with a cozy couch, non-slip surfaces, dog-appeasing pheromones, sound therapy, and freshly prepared lick mats and activity toys. Preventive services such as annual physical exams, vaccines, heartworm testing, and fecal exams are available, as well as diagnostics for minor ailments like ear, skin or urinary tract infections. Laser therapy is also available to aid in the treatment of pain and inflammation associated with a variety of conditions. Prescriptions can be provided as needed for minor illnesses or injuries. Canine Body and Mind does not see dogs with serious illnesses or injuries or those requiring surgical or emergency care.
For people who are uncomfortable taking their dog to the veterinarian because of the dog’s fear, anxiety or stress in that setting, Dr. Belock offers private lessons to help dogs learn to be more comfortable with the handling required for basic medical procedures. When the dog is ready, Dr. Belock can administer vaccines or draw blood for a heartworm test in the low-stress environment where the dog feels relaxed. Then the training continues in order to generalize the behavior and mitigate the dog’s stress when visiting other veterinary practices as well. Further, Dr. Belock has designed a Cooperative Care Course to teach dogs to voluntarily participate in various husbandry procedures to prevent them from being fearful in a veterinary setting in the first place.
As part of their commitment to the physical and behavioral wellness of dogs, Canine Body and Mind offers a wide variety of training services for dogs of all ages. In keeping with current behavior research, all trainers at the center use positive reinforcement based techniques, free from the use of force or aversive tools. The Puppy Pals Program includes puppy socialization classes, supervised puppy playgroup, AKC STAR Puppy classes, private lessons and other opportunities for healthy behavioral development. Adult dogs can enroll in focused workshops, private lessons and certificate programs, such as AKC Canine Good Citizen and Fenzi TEAM Cooperative Care. For dogs with behavior problems such as aggression, reactivity, fear or anxiety Dr. Belock offers in-person or virtual behavior consults.
With a special interest in canine behavior, Dr. Belock bridges the gap between veterinarian and lay trainer. As a veterinarian, Dr. Belock can offer behavior consults from the perspective of a medical professional and prescribe medications as indicated, in addition to providing follow-up training and behavior modification sessions.
